BT backs Orange landline launch

26 сентября 2007

BT Wholesale will provide managed network services to support Orange's new fixed-line telephony service in the U.K.. The telcos did not provide financial terms of the deal, which will see BT provide wholesale landline services to customers of Orange's Home Max broadband package, unveiled in the U.K. last week.

The service will be offered under the Orange brand, but will be managed and maintained by BT Wholesale. This includes customer management, and covers the establishment and running of Orange's call centres. Orange said last week that it has set up a new customer support centre in Belfast.

"Mobile and fixed-line operators are actively broadening the range of the services they offer customers," said Brian Fitzpatrick, managing director of BT Wholesale Markets, in a statement.

"Orange in entering a competitive marketplace and this means speed of entry and quality of service are key," he added.

In addition to enabling Orange to bring its fixed-line offer to market faster, the tie-up with BT Wholesale reduces both the risk and cost associated with rolling out fixed-line infrastructure, BT also noted.

Orange is offering landline services under the Home Max brand. In addition to a fixed-line connection, The Home Max package includes a broadband service of up to 8 Mbps, with a wireless router. It is priced at £24 per month (if the customer pays by direct debit), including line rental and free evening and weekend calls to U.K. fixed-line numbers. Existing mobile customers pay just £9 per month for the service.

Entering the competitive U.K. market will not be an easy task for Orange. However, the operator has cleared one potential obstacle with the introduction of a Home Starter package, designed for customers who want to keep their existing fixed-line supplier. This should help to attract customers who are either unwilling or unable to switch providers for all their telecoms services at once.

Home Starter is priced at £12 per month – or £5 for Orange mobile customers – and also includes unlimited evening and weekend calls to U.K. landline numbers and a wireless router. This package carries a 6 Gigabyte monthly download limit.
