Interest grows in possible mobilkom listing

14 мая 2008

A number of big names in the industry could be interested in Telekom Austria's mobile unit, if separate listing takes place, according to press reports.

Rumours of a possible listing of Telekom Austria's mobilkom unit gathered pace on Tuesday, when the local press reported signs of interest in the operation from a number of industry players.

Top of the list is Russian oligarch Vladimir Jewtuschenkow, founder and majority owner of Russian conglomerate Sistema, according to Austria's Wirtschaftsblatt.

The news comes just days after it emerged that Austrian government-owned holding company OAIG, which holds a 27.37% stake in Telekom
Austria, is keen for the incumbent telco to be split into two publicly-listed companies.

OAIG declined to comment on the plan, which it has reportedly submitted to the Austrian chancellor and could be presented to shareholders this summer.

Such a move, Der Standard reported, would see Telekom
Austria's troubled fixed-line operations spun-off into a separate entity, thereby smoothing the way for the wireless business.

According to Tuesday's report, Jewtuschenkow is not the only party interested in mobilkom.

The paper reports that while the Russian businessman is "the most promising candidate", given that he has private wealth of US$10 billion,
Spain's Telefonica and Vodafone – already a partner of Telekom Austria in some markets – are also likely contenders.
