LatAm mobile content revenues to reach $8.93bn by 2014

The mobile content market is growing rapidly in Latin America, with 31.1%, or 57.1 million, of the country's mobile subscribers categorised as content users last year.
And revenues from mobile content services in the region grew to $1.15 billion, that is, 3.1% of total mobile telephony revenues in 2007, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan.
Citing figures from its Latin American Mobile Content Markets report, the analyst firm predicts that revenues will rise to $8.93 billion in 2014.
"With mobile voice revenues per user not growing at the impressive rates seen in the last few years, Latin American mobile operators have been investing their efforts in promoting data services," said Frost & Sullivan research analysts Justina Trotta and Andres Sciarrotta, in a statement.
"Although mobile messaging is still the dominant component of the region's mobile data service market, mobile content services are fast gaining traction," they added.
The firm noted that mobile music is still the most popular mobile content service, but it sees gaming and mobile video growing steadily in future years.
In Brazil, for example, mobile music generated revenues of $250.2 million dollars last year, or 38.1% of total revenues in the mobile content space.
And 37.7% of Brazil's 122.8 million mobile subscribers used at least one mobile content service in 2007, Trotta said.
Latin America's two largest economies, Brazil and Mexico, witnessed strong growth last year generating $1.11 billion in mobile content revenues, up 48.5% on the previous year.
But there is still a long way to go.
"The Latin American market is still limited by the fact that not all mobile handsets are capable of running all mobile content services, especially games and videos," said Sciarotta.
"The impact of this restraint is, however, expected to diminish once handsets become more affordable and accessible, enlarging the addressable market size," he added.
