Russia adds 1.6m mobile users in August
|18 сентября 2008|
Penetration reaches new heights in Moscow in St Petersburg, driving rest of market, according to new statistics; growth remains slow in Ukraine.
The number of mobile subscribers in Russia reached 177.3 million by the end of August, up 13.6 million on the same date last year and an increase of 1.6 million from July, according to analyst firm Advanced Communications & Media.
Penetration in the country now exceeds 122%, driven by the big cities; there were 174 SIM cards in use per 100 population in Moscow at the end of last month and 159 in St Petersburg, bucking the trend by some margin.
Despite a small number of net additions in Moscow, Russian market leader MTS recorded negative growth in August, its domestic customer base sliding to 61.48 million from 61.86 million. However, the telco retains the top spot overall with a 34.7% market share.
Third-placed MegaFon turned in the strongest performance in August, taking a 43.9% share of Russia's net customer additions – and a 47.9% share in Moscow – to take its total market share to 22.4%. Its customer base rose to 40.57 million from 39.72 million.
However, MegaFon only just pipped closest rival and second-placed player Vimpelcom, which claimed 43.8% of new additions, taking its subs base to 44.26 million and its market share to 24.4%.
MTS and Vimpelcom witnessed slow growth in the neighbouring Ukraine though, where third-placed player Astelit took over 60% of net customer additions, boosting its customer base to 10.58 million and its market share to 19%.
Market minnow Vimpelcom added just over 100,000 subscribers last month to boost its customer base to 2.37 million, but with a market share of 4.2% it remains some way behind its rivals.
Market leader Kyivstar and number two operator MTS added around 10,000 and 2,500 customers respectively, with the Ukraine's total subscriber base creeping up to 55.72 million from 55.31 million a month ago. Penetration stands at 120.6%.
