Telefonica O2 extends benefits of NSN mobile technology to customers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic

27 февраля 2009

Telefónica O2 has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to extend its mobile networks in Brno and Prague in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The deal will enable O2 to ensure enhanced capacity and high quality for advanced wireless services, including mobile broadband and data services with industry-leading speed and reliability.

Under a three-year contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will be the sole supplier of the 2G and optionally 3G networks covering Slovakia and 2G and 3G in the Czech Republic’s two major cities, Prague and Brno, allowing O2 to offer end users a new mobile broadband experience with fast data sharing and true multimedia services.

The solution from Nokia Siemens Networks is based on the market-leading Flexi Base station, which not only introduces a very flexible and modular concept to mobile access, but also allows significant savings in terms of required space and power consumption. At the same time, the Flexi implementation opens the way for a smooth migration to Long Term Evolution, or LTE, the next generation of mobile networks, as the base station is LTE-compatible.

“We are committed to offering our customers the best services and our continued cooperation with Nokia Siemens Networks will ensure a smooth expansion of our 2G and 3G mobile networks in Prague and Brno by state-of–the art technology.,” said Petr SlovaÄek, Vice President Operations, Telefónica O2 Czech Republic.

Nokia Siemens Networks will expand O2’s 2G (GSM/EDGE) and 3G (WCDMA/HSPA) networks to give end users high-quality broadband experience with seamless transition between 2G and 3G, better coverage and higher mobile broadband speed. The contract reaffirms vendor’s role as a strategic partner for Telefónica O2 operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

“On completing the trial of our Flexi EDGE BTS, O2 opted to go with us because they recognized that our unique design and architecture is one of the most cost efficient and environmentally sustainable solutions available in the industry today. The scope of the deal is significant as it consolidates our position as their lead supplier from now until 2011,” said Thomas Riedel of Nokia Siemens Networks, in charge of business with Telefónica O2 across Europe.

Nokia Siemens Networks also will provide network implementation and maintenance services to ensure an efficient and high quality network expansion, working on live networks without interrupting the service. In addition, integration services will bring the new elements quickly and effectively into Telefónica’s mobile core network, which Nokia Siemens Networks had supplied to Telefónica in the past.

Nokia Siemens Networks is the industry leader in WCDMA/HSPA, to date having over 140 3G radio network references, with over 110 networks in commercial use. The company is also the indisputable leader in EDGE with over 140 references and commercial deployments. At the same time, it enables its customers to minimize their environmental impact and address escalating energy costs through the industry’s most innovative, energy efficient solutions.

Nokia Siemens Networks has repeatedly proved it leadership in LTE development, with successful technology demonstrations and LTE field trials, and the unveiling in February 2008 of its LTE end-to-end solution based on the Flexi Multimode Base Station.
