Four Asian telcos to build $500m undersea cable

19 марта 2009

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Co., China's China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd., and Japan's KDDI Corp. plan to jointly build a US$500 million undersea cable with a Singapore telecommunications services provider.

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. and its local rival Starhub Ltd. are competing to take part in the project, the Chinese-language newspaper reported.

Once a
Singapore partner emerges, the four companies will sign a memorandum of understanding in April on building the 11,000-kilometer undersea communications cable, called APCN3, that will stretch from Singapore to Japan through Taiwan, the newspaper said.

The project is expected to be completed by 2013, it added.
