Ukrtelecom attracts 10 potential buyers

20 марта 2009

Around 10 companies are interested in bidding for Ukraine's state-controlled fixed-line monopoly Ukrtelecom, the State Property Fund's acting head Dmitry Parfenenko said Wednesday.

"The number of companies (willing to buy a stake in Ukrtelecom) is constantly growing. Today, there are around 10 of them," Parfenenko said.

Among the potential buyers are: Russia's largest long-distance operator Rostelecom, Turkish mobile operator Turkcell, Germany's Deutsche Telekom and its Hungarian unit Magyar Telekom, and Japanese financial company Nomura, the official said.

The fund earlier planned to put a 67.8% stake up for sale in March, but no final decision has been made about the timing for the sale, Parfenenko said.

The Ukrainian government owns 92.9% in Ukrtelecom, which controls about 70% of Ukraine's local fixed-line market. The company posted a loss of 1.526 billion hryvnas ($191 million) in 2008 against a profit of UAH267 million a year earlier.
