Norway, Russia to discuss Telenor row Tuesday

24 марта 2009

Norway's foreign minister Jonas Gahr Store will discuss Telenor ASA's ongoing legal disputes in Russia when he meets with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow Tuesday, ministry spokesman Bjorn S. Jahnsen said Monday.

"He will point out that this may have negative consequences for Russia's reputation among foreign investors," Jahnsen told Dow Jones Newswires.

Telecommunications company Telenor, which is 54% owned by the Norwegian government, earlier in March said a Russian bailiff acting on behalf of Farimex Products Inc., has arrested all of its shares in VimpelCom, Russia's second-largest mobile phone operator.

Telenor holds 33.6% of the common shares in VimpelCom. It has been in a struggle with Alfa Group, VimpelCom's primary owner, over control of Ukraine's largest mobile operator Kyivstar, where Telenor now holds a controlling stake. Telenor has previously said Farimex, a little-known company which owns 0.002% in VimpelCom, is acting on behalf of Alfa Group, which the Russian company denies.
