Flash chips spark Toshiba profits
Toshiba on Monday reported a sharp rise in quarterly profit as it reversed losses in its personal computer business and saw strong demand for memory chips from makers of portable music players and mobile phones.
The Japanese electronic equipment maker said operating profit rose 38 per cent to Y61.3bn ($534m) in the three months to September. Chips accounted for more than half the total.
Toshiba raised its profit forecast for the full year, largely to reflect the $1.4bn sale of a building in Tokyo. It plans to book profits from the sale in the second half, to help fund an expansion of its microchip business.
Operating profit is expected to total Y290bn, up from a previous forecast of Y260bn. Net profit is seen at Y180bn, up from Y120bn.
