Mobile operators urged to focus on competition

30 апреля 2009

Mobile phone operators are maintaining revenue and customer growth despite the global recession and should instead concentrate on competition and regulation issues which pose a bigger threat to the industry, consultancy company Ovum said Wednesday.

"It is no use bickering about the recession when rivals are positioning themselves to outsmart you," Ovum senior analyst Emeka Obiodu said, following the release of the report Mobile Operators In A Recession: Lessons and Coping Strategies.

"Neither is it savvy to fret about the fall in roaming revenues from business travelers when the E.U. can force roaming prices down easily," he added.

According to the report most operators in emerging markets are yet to experience any significant pressures on their performance, while in the
U.S. and Europe operators' revenue remains steady.

"We are yet to find any mobile operator that is calamitously struggling solely because of the recession," Obiodu said.

The threat of a decline in revenue-generating customers hasn't materialized as mobile operators are generally still growing and adding customers, the report said. The biggest to mobile operators as a result of the recession is that currency fluctuation reduce the value of revenue, the report added.
