Cable firms bring competition to fast broadband

10 июля 2009

Cable operators are the biggest competitors to traditional telecommunications companies in the push for high speed broadband, said Fabio Colasanti, the senior civil servant of the European Commission's telecoms unit Thursday.

Cable companies' investment in the next generation broadband is "strengthening the decision by other operators to invest in fiber optic networks," Colasanti said, in an interview with Cable Europe, a lobby group representing leading cable TV operators.

The commission has long tried to find a way to encourage Europe's telecoms companies to invest in fast fiber optic broadband networks, while ensuring that competitors gain access to them, to safeguard competition in the market place. Most telecoms companies argue that before investing heavily in new infrastructure they want regulatory safeguards to ensure they can recoup the costs.

Colasanti said that infrastructure competition from Cable operators could lead to a "more rapid take-up" of next generation broadband in the next few years.
