Telcos go for simplicity in tough economy
|04 августа 2009|
Telecoms operators are leaning towards simple network architectures, applications and services as they seek to adjust to the difficult economic situation, according to IEC president John Janowiak.
"Simple is better these days," Janowiak told Total Telecom recently, attributing the philosophy to a colleague at Telecom Italia.
Telcos are looking for a simple, clean approach to their business, he said, compared with the "time of plenty", when it was all about "how many bells and whistles do you have?" he explained.
"Not everyone is out to buy the Ferrari any more," he said; people are seeking simplicity, efficiency and reliability.
"Operators are getting their arms around what the new environment is going to be about," Janowiak added.
Dealing with the recession is likely to one of the key themes at this year's Broadband World Forum Europe, which will be held in Paris next month.
And Janowiak insists that the show is as relevant now as it ever was, perhaps even more so.
"People need to get together. People need to talk," he said. "It's important for the industry during these times to have a sense of vitality."
According to Janowiak, attendance at this year's event will be similar to previous years, despite the economic downturn.
"We're very close to where we were last year in terms of the number of companies," he said, admitting that average spend per company has fallen a little.
"Registrations are ahead of where we were this time last year," he added.
The theme of Broadband World Forum Europe 2009 is Delivering the Promise.
"I think the industry has been delivering the promise of broadband," said Janowiak.
"The train has left the station," he said. "[It's about] here and now. The processes, applications, products and services," that are in the marketplace or are about to be introduced.
