TELE Greenland brings 3G to the capital of the world’s largest island

16 сентября 2009

Come May 2010, TELE Greenland will be able to offer its subscribers mobile broadband services enabled by 3G. The operator has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to roll out a 3G network on 900 MHz frequency and upgrade its existing core network.

“As the incumbent operator in Greenland, it is our task to offer high quality mobile services to the people in Greenland. We selected Nokia Siemens Networks because it offered an integrated, simple to manage 900 MHz 3G solution to meet our needs at a competitive price,” said Jørn Jespersen, Chief Technical Officer, TELE Greenland.

Nokia Siemens Networks will implement a 3G network for TELE Greenland, including its energy efficient Flexi base stations and highly efficient radio network controllers. The 3G network will be monitored, managed and optimized by the network management system to ensure high quality services towards TELE Greenland’s customers.

The solution will allow the operator to minimize its carbon footprint, and realize cost efficiencies. Thanks to the efficient WCDMA 900MHz solution TELE Greenland will be able to provide wider coverage with minimum frequency requirement. Nokia Siemens Networks will provide network implementation and software maintenance services, as well as emergency call support. Implementation of the 3G network will be completed in spring 2010.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also upgrade and modernize TELE Greenland’s existing GPRS network with combined 2G/3G SGSN and Flexi ISN, to allow the TELE Greenland to offer more sophisticated data services to its customers.

“Mobile broadband offers on-the-go data connectivity to users. TELE Greenland subscribers will be able to enjoy a wide range of new services, and we are happy to support that with the launch of 3G in this large island, thus continuing our long-standing relationship with TELE Greenland,” said Thomas Jul, Head of Sub region Nordic, Nokia Siemens Networks. “TELE Greenland will start 3G services first in the capital Nuuk area, with an option to expand the service in the more remote areas later.”
