Ex-tech Motorola chief to join Cisco Systems

05 декабря 2007

Cisco Systems, the world’s biggest maker of data networking equipment, on Tuesday tapped the former technology chief of Motorola to become its chief technology officer.

Padmasree Warrior, a 23-year Motorola veteran, announced her departure from the US handset maker on Monday. She will fill a post that has been vacant at Cisco since 2005.Ex-tech Motorola chief to join Cisco Systems

Cisco said it had decided to re-establish the CTO role as part of an effort to focus to the company’s technology strategy as it attempted to take advantage of a new generation of internet technologies.

“I believe Cisco to be a company that is at the heart of a second phase of internet evolution,” Ms Warrior said, pointing to opportunities in areas such as online collaboration and mobility.

“My role will be to work with [Cisco chief executive] John Chambers and management to identify the new technology Cisco needs to focus on, and what investments we need to make in these areas,” she said.

Ms Warrior was one of several top officials to leave Motorola after the resignation of Ed Zander, who stepped down as chief executive last week under pressure from shareholders unhappy with the company’s recent performance.

At Cisco, she will fill a role last occupied by Charlie Giancarlo, a top Cisco executive who left the CTO position in 2005 after he was promoted to chief development officer.

Cisco, which built its business by selling switches, routers and other internet infrastructure, has been branching out into new markets in recent years as it seeks to sustain its sales growth.

John Chambers, chief executive, has argued that Cisco stands to benefit as the spread of broadband internet access and the rising importance of online video increase demand for new networking equipment and services.

Cisco’s shares followed the broader market lower on Tuesday ahead of the announcement, falling 2.2 per cent to $26.96.
