Nine Bidders Emerge for India's 3G License Auction

India's Department of Telecoms (DoT) has confirmed that nine companies have applied to participate in the forthcoming 3G license auction, and that eleven bidders have emerged for the BWA auction that follows.

The 3G spectrum auction is due to start on the 9th April and the BWA, two days after the close of 3G auctions.

The nine bidders for the 3G licenses are: Bharti, Vodafone-Essar, Tata Teleservices, Etisalat, S Tel, Videocon, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular and Aircel. The two state-run telecom companies, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) already have 3G licenses, and will be required to pay a license fee based on the outcome of the auction for private licenses.

The 11 bidders for the BWA licenses are: Tikona Digital, Qualcomm, Tata Communications, Vodafone-Essar, Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Spice, Augere, HFCL, and Reliance Communications.

India is offering three 3G slots in most of its 22 telecoms service areas, while two slots per service area are available for BWA radio airwaves.
