Intelsat, Hughes Expands Distant Learning Program

02 апреля 2007
Officials at Brazil's third largest university have been reporting a significant increase in satellite transponder demand as the popularity of its distance learning program has steadily increased. In response, Intelsat said it is extending an existing contract with UNOPAR to offer additional capacity via its IS-1R satellite, enabling the South American institution to broaden the distribution of its distance learning program.

UNOPAR and Hughes Telecomunicacoes do Brasil (HTB) jointly operate a VSAT satellite network provided by Hughes Network Systems. The groups said securing more satellite capacity from Intelsat enables UNOPAR's Connected Education Center to expand its VSAT network ensuring the university can maintain high technical standards needed to serve its growing tele-classrooms.

Throughout the past year, UNOPAR increased the number of tele-classrooms it operates to more than 1,000 - serving 70K students enrolled in its Connected Presence Teaching System.
