Wireless service subscriptions to reach 5bn in Sept

20 сентября 2010

The number of wireless-service subscriptions is expected to reach five billion this month, but growth is set to slow the next several years, according to market research firm iSuppli Corp.

Devices from flip-phones to smartphones represent "the biggest stage that any technology market has ever played on" and are leading the tech supply chain toward wireless-oriented platforms from the slower-growing computer market. Nevertheless, this year's 11% subscription growth from 2009 compares with forecasts of 8.2% next year and 6.6% in 2012.

"Wireless communication now has spread to every nation, every age and every income level, becoming a basic staple like food, clothing and shelter," said iSuppli senior director Jagdish Rebello.

The five billion figure equates to nearly three-quarters of the world's population--many people have more than one subscription. For example, Western Europe has more subscriptions than citizens. Europeans often have multiple service plans and phones as they seek to maintain communications while traveling among countries with different providers and air standards.

Meanwhile, penetration of wireless subscriptions is 50% in Africa and the Middle East.

ISuppli went on to say that the market for software included in cellphones when consumers buy them will expand to $7.7 billion in 2014 from $4.4 billion in 2010. The firm projects the market for semiconductors serving the sector will jump to $80.2 billion from $60.9 billion over the same time frame.
