Cellular Baseband Market Revenues Jumped to $5.96 Billion in 1H 2010

13 октября 2010

Cellular baseband market revenues reached $5.96 billion in 1H 2010, up 15.5 percent compared to the same period the year before, according to Strategy Analytics. The study provisionally estimates that total cellular baseband processor revenues reached $3.04 billion in Q2 2010.

This Strategy Analytics report reveals that in 1H 2010, MediaTek ranked number one in both GSM/GPRS/EDGE (GGE) and TD-SCDMA baseband markets in terms of revenue. Qualcomm ranked number one in CDMA and W-CDMA baseband markets in the same period. The study also shows that baseband vendors, such as Qualcomm, Icera, Infineon and ST-Ericsson, are benefitting from the growth in the non-handset segment, which includes PC data cards, PNDs, netbooks, tablets, wireless USB dongles and M2M.

According to Stuart Robinson, Director of the Handset Component technologies service at Strategy Analytics, "The cellular baseband market continues to show strength. Unit shipments grew 23 percent in 1H 2010 - up from the year before -with Broadcom, Spreadtrum and Icera showing triple-digit revenue growth. After a difficult 2009, ST-Ericsson showed signs of recovery but the company now has to tackle its relatively stagnant W-CDMA baseband market share."

"The non-handset market is emerging as an exciting opportunity for baseband vendors, accounting for 12 percent of total baseband revenues in 1H 2010," commented Sravan Kundojjala, Senior Analyst. He added, "Qualcomm led the non-handset baseband market with 72 percent unit shipment share and 75 percent revenue share in 1H 2010. Interestingly, from 1H 2009 to 1H 2010, Qualcomm's baseband shipments to non-handsets grew faster than its baseband shipments to handsets."
