Camera phone shipments to reach 1 billion in 2011

08 апреля 2011

The number of camera phones shipped worldwide during 2011 will surpass 1 billion units for the first time ever, with high-end cameras experiencing particularly rapid growth, predicted Strategy Analytics on Thursday.

The research firm said the figure represents a 21% increase from last year, when 918 million, or 67.5% of the 1.36 billion devices shipped in 2010 were cameraphones. Camera phones will comprise 74% of the 1.50 billion handsets expected to ship this year.

"Some 4.2 billion cameraphones have been sold cumulatively worldwide since 2000," Strategy Analytics' Neil Shah, said in a research note, commenting that the devices are one of the "most successful mobile products ever developed".

Strategy Analytics expects the upsurge in camera phone shipments this year to be driven by the high end of the market.

"Smartphone vendors, such as Nokia and HTC, are increasingly loading their flagship models with more megapixels to deliver improved imaging quality for premium operator services like augmented reality," said Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics.

He expects camera phones with sensors of eight megapixels and above to see a 240% surge in global shipments in 2011.

"The camera-free segments of the handset market today are mostly the high-volume, low-end 2G models," he said in an email to Total Telecom.

These are typically pitched at prepaid users in emerging markets across Africa and Asia, he said.
