Five Italian operators apply for 4G auction

28 июля 2011

Five Italian telecom operators have submitted requests to participate in the country's auction for new fourth-generation mobile frequencies, Italy's industry ministry said.

The four major Italian mobile operators--Telecom Italia SpA, Vodafone, Wind SpA and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.'s 3 Italia--and broadband provider Linkem SpA have applied for the auction, the ministry said.

4G technology will allow customers to receive and upload data to their mobile devices more quickly, encouraging a new wave of services such as high-definition mobile video.

Industry Minister Paolo Romani said if all the new frequencies are sold, the auction proceeds will be at least EUR3.1 billion.

The government will release the list of the operators admitted to the auction by July 29 and they will then have a month to present their offers.

The auction is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.
