UK Government Plans $7.2 Billion Smart Meter Deployment Across the Country

08 сентября 2011

The UK government's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has issued a tender for up to 30 million smart meters to be installed in homes and businesses across the entire country within 4 years from the contract award.

The contract could be worth as much as £4.5 billion (US$7.2 billion) over a 20 year time frame.

The contract stems from a government objective for every home in Great Britain (GB) to have smart energy meters, empowering people to manage their energy consumption and reduce their carbon emissions.

Communication of data to and from smart meters in the domestic sector will be managed centrally by a new, UK-wide function covering both the electricity and gas sectors.

The communications services will be split into three geographically based lots.

  • Smart meter communications services in northern GB including Scotland.
  • Smart meter communications services in central GB including Wales.
  • Smart meter communications services in southern GB.

Depending on the duration of the contracts when finally awarded, each of the three zones is expected to be worth between GBP 330 million and GBP 1.53 billion.

Suppliers have until the 14th October to register their interest.
