O2 UK trials VoIP over WiFi

14 октября 2011

O2 UK announced this week that a mixture of 1,000 consumer and business customers will be invited to trial O2 Connect, a downloadable smartphone application that enables users to make free VoIP calls to mobile or landline numbers over a WiFi connection.

A spokesman for the operator told Total Telecom that the application will initially be available on Android and Apple iOS devices. Calls originating from the VoIP application will be treated as a normal incoming phone call by the receiving handset. It isn't "app to app", the spokesman explained.

There is no extra login for the user since O2 Connect uses their current mobile phone number, and is intended as an alternative method of communication when there is no available mobile signal.

"This trial will allow us to explore the potential of delivering VoIP services to customers," said Richard Porter, head of consumer mobile products for O2, on Thursday. "We hope to launch O2 Connect as a commercial service in 2012."

At this point, there are "no detailed plans" to extend the service to feature phones, other operating systems, or to enable VoIP calls over a 3G, the spokesman added. O2 will assess the response to the trial before deciding how to commercialise the application.

"We see O2 Connect as part of an overall communications offering from O2," the spokesman said. "We anticipate that in a commercial product, some parts of the O2 Connect service will be included within existing pricing, others will be sold as extras."
