Intel to launch new CPUs for tablet PCs in 2012

11 ноября 2011

Intel reportedly plans to overhaul its product roadmap for 2012, with its Medfield CPUs focusing on handset applications, while developing a new CPU lineup exclusively for tablet PCs, according to industry sources. The Medfield CPUs originally designed to target both the handset and tablet PC sectors.

The launch of new tablet processors from Intel aims to take on ARM's CPUs, especially in terms of thermal design power (TDP) and performance, the sources indicated.

The TDP ratings of Intel's new CPUs for smartphones and tablet PCs will be lowered to 10W in the next two years with the manufacturing processes of new chips to be upgraded every year, instead of a span of two years currently, said the sources.

Intel plans to launch 32nm Saltwell, 22nm Silvermont and 14nm Airmont chipsets in the next three years, the sources revealed
