UK gets its first LTE network

The U.K. got its first LTE network on Wednesday when UK Broadband switched on its TD-LTE infrastructure in London and shared plans to offer wholesale services on it.
The company has built out what it claims is the world's first TD-LTE network in the 3.5-GHz spectrum band in the Southwark area of London. The network, based on equipment provided by Huawei, is largely for demonstration purposes as the company seeks to attract potential customers.Its rollout plan will see it build out additional network in areas where customers require it.
″We will be announcing a city build in a couple of weeks,″ Nicholas James, CEO of PCCW-owned UK Broadband, told Total Telecom.
The commercial launch of the network will take place on 1 May, from which time the company will offer a home hub-type of broadband access point. Its first mobile device – a portable WiFi hotspot – will follow in September; it is currently evaluating proposals from four vendors keen to supply the product.
″By June of next year,″ it will launch a Huawei smartphone that will run both on its frequency and in the 2.6-GHz band, as well as on standard 3G networks to provide full coverage, James said. ″There might [also] be other [smartphones].″
UK Broadband has yet to announce which U.K. mobile operator it will use as its roaming partner in areas where there is no TD-LTE coverage.
The company insists that many potential wholesale customers are waiting in the wings to test the new network, having waiting for some years to see what UK Broadband would do with its sizeable spectrum holdings.
″One or two people are talking to us,″ about adding LTE services to their portfolios in small areas, James said. These include companies providing services to SMEs, for example.
″There are [also] lots of others,″ he said.
