City Telecom to sell HK, China, Canada telecom assets for HK$5.01bn

12 апреля 2012

City Telecom (H.K.) Ltd. said Wednesday it agreed to sell its telecom assets in Hong Kong, China and Canada to a company backed by private equity firm CVC Capital Partners for HK$5.01 billion (US$645.2 million), as the Hong Kong-listed firm moves to develop its television broadcast business.

City Telecom said it will sell the assets, which include long-distance phone services in Hong Kong and Canada as well as broadband internet services in Hong Kong, to Metropolitan Light Co. City Telecom said it will also sell its call-center and customer support services in China.

City Telecom said the sale will allow the firm to focus on its television broadcast business, which already employs 250 staff and will grow by another 170 in the near future. It said the broadcast business is a long-term development project, requiring investments of at least HK$2.50 billion over the next four years.

City Telecom also said it plans to recommend a special dividend of HK$2.50 per share as part of the asset disposal. City Telecom's shares rose sharply upon resuming trade Wednesday, and were up 11% at HK$5.52 at 0136 GMT. The company's shares were suspended from trading Apr. 2.
