Optus to launch LTE trial next week
|28 апреля 2012|
Optus has announced that next week will see the launch of an LTE trial covering 1,000 premises located in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia.Select business and residential customers in Greater Newcastle, Maitland, Port Stephens and parts of the Hunter Valley – one of the country's foremost wine-producing regions – will be given free access to '4G' mobile services in exchange for feedback on network and device performance.
"Today marks the first step towards Australians having a choice for 4G services so they can connect and interact in new ways," said Günther Ottendorfer, managing director of Optus' networks, in a statement on Thursday.
"By working with our customers to gather their feedback, Optus aims to continually enhance its 4G network and ensure that customers have an outstanding experience now, and into the future," he said.
Customers participating in the trial will be given LTE dongles, with business customers also receiving mobile WiFi hotspots. Optus said LTE handsets will be made available "over the coming months".
"We are excited about the new opportunities that 4G will provide to our business customers," said Ottendorfer. "They will be able to send and receive large files much quicker, or collaborate with their colleagues via video or Web conferencing."
The trial network will run on Optus' 1800-MHz spectrum. The company plans to extend LTE coverage to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth by mid 2012, and to Brisbane and Adelaide in the first half of 2013.
Going forward the operator also plans to build out a metropolitan LTE-TDD network running on airwaves in the 2.3-GHz band, which Optus acquired as part of its purchase of Seven Group's Vividwireless in February for A$230 million.
