|30 января 2008|
The Society of Satellite Professionals International, the professional development group of the global satellite industry, announced the winners of its 2008 Industry Innovators Awards on Monday.
And the list contains big names in the business.
In the service development and applications category, SSPI recognized WildBlue for its two-way broadband service via Ka-Band and the Global VSAT Forum for its role in the successful effort to protect C-Band satellite spectrum at the recent ITU 2007 World Radiocommunications Conference.
In the systems development and applications group, Hughes Network Systems won kudos for its deployment of the Spaceway 3 satellite, the next-generation Ka-band bird that became the first to employ on-board traffic switching and routing capability. Edusat and Mindset Networks also were honored for their satellite-based education efforts.
Special recognitions also were given to the planet's first satellite launches: Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union (now Russia) on Oct. 4, 1957, and Explorer 1 by the United States on Jan. 31, 1958.
