In the systems development and applications group, Hughes Network Systems won kudos for its deployment of the Spaceway 3 satellite, the next-generation Ka-band bird that became the first to employ on-board traffic switching and routing capability. Edusat and Mindset Networks also were honored for their satellite-based education efforts.
Special recognitions also were given to the planet's first satellite launches: Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union (now Russia) on Oct. 4, 1957, and Explorer 1 by the United States on Jan. 31, 1958.
