Surprise, another alternative for mobile TV

01 марта 2006
The difficulty in freeing up UHF spectrum in some European countries such as the U.K., France and Germany for mobile TV services has prompted Alcatel to propose yet another mobile TV solution. Alcatel has proposed using DVB-H in the 2.2 GHz band and adding a mobile satellite component to it.

Alcatel's time frame is to have a terrestrial repeater network ready for commercial deployment by 2007. A new satellite to support rural services will need to be launched and is expected to be in place in 2008 or 2009. The move is similar to what is happening in Korea, where players are launching terrestrial and satellite versions DMB-based mobile TV services. But there are also several regulatory changes that need to take place for such a plan to move forward.
