Will set-top boxes be the choke point?
While network operators may have ambitious plans for digital services rollouts to the home, the going will be rocky until set-top boxes can manage metadata efficiently. According to new media research firm The Diffusion Group, set-top boxes currently don't handle application metadata smoothly, a problem which should only grow more pronounced as carriers roll out new applications like VoIP. For example, if data streams aren't integrated, consumers might find themselves searching multiple times to find a single program, analysts say. And with bundled services still in their early growth stages, the last thing network operators need is to frustrate consumers with kludgy technology.
