Digital Radio Ready for Takeoff

26 января 2007
The conversion from analog radio to digital is well under way around the world and gaining momentum rapidly, suggests a new report from research firm In-Stat. Worldwide, the market for digital radio receivers will grow from 5 million units in 2005 to almost 25 million by the year 2010, the company said.

According to In-Stat analyst Stephanie Ethier, the primary factors contributing to the expected growth are decreasing receiver costs, an increase in the amount of quality digital programming, significant boosts in promotion and advertising and enhanced functionality of digital receivers.

"Digital radio is still an emerging market," Ethier said. "Opportunities about for retailers, broadcasters, automobile OEMs and receiver manufacturers alike." In-Stat's "More Consumer to Tune Into Digital Radio in 2007" study also showed that 73 percent of respondents to a company consumer survey were aware of HD Radio on some level, and in Europe (primarily the U.K.), digital audio broadcasting is the pervasive form of radio, with DAB receiver shipments outpacing analog radio receiver shipments in 2006.
