Eutelsat Breaks 1K Channel Milestone

14 февраля 2007
Commercial satellite company Eutelsat Communications has been doing research for nearly two years on satellite and cable homes across the planet. Last week the company offered a glimpse of the study's results that showed pay-TV homes are growing faster than TV homes, and that its HOT BIRD video neighborhood broke the barrier of 1,000 digital channels.

The company said its survey measures trends in satellite and cable reception in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East served by Eutelsat's key video neighborhoods. Commissioned from research firms including GfK, TNS Sofres and Ipsos, the new data produced across 42 countries revealed that satellite and cable homes have expanded "twice as fast over the last 24 months as the growth of television homes."

Eutelsat's survey said that satellite and cable penetration increased by 13 percent to 170 million homes from 150 million, while television homes expanded by six percent to 333 million from 314 million. According to the research, satellite and cable reception has passed the tipping point of 50 percent to all television homes.

The survey also said Eutelsat's HOT BIRD neighborhood audience, at the end of 2006, grew from 111 million to 121 million homes - 40 percent of which (47.5 million) are equipped for direct-to-home satellite reception. The company said the satellite growth paralleled a steady increase in channels broadcast, which grew by 273 channels during the same period to more than 1,050 in December.
