British Telecom gears up for WiMAX
British Telecom issued an RFI (request for information) to potential WiMAX suppliers as it gears up to bid for spectrum at the end of 2007. U.K. regulator Ofcom is planning to re-open the UMTS Extension 2.5 GHz to 2.69 GHz band later this year. BT appears to be quite enthusiastic about WiMAX. If the company fails to secure spectrum, BT executives say they could pursue an MVNO deal with one of the successful bidders. Could this be the start of some aggressive moves by European incumbents toward WiMAX?
