SS/L Looking Good at 50

02 августа 2007
Loral Space and Communications subsidiary Space Systems/Loral is looking good for its age, because this week the satellite communications pioneer is turning 50. Who in 1957 knew that SS/L would help develop the entire satellite industry by providing commercial sat services for operators and service providers around the world.

The company was established as the Western Development Laboratories division of Philco Corporation 50 years ago with the construction of its first campus building in Palo Alto, Calif. Soon after, in 1966, the company became Philco-Ford after a buyout from the Ford Motor Co. in '61, then was later renamed Aeronutronic Ford and eventually Ford Aerospace.

Ford Aerospace then took the name Space Systems/Loral when it was acquired in 1990 by Loral Space and Communications and a consortium of international partners. In 1997, Loral became the sole owner of SS/L, the company said.

According to the company, SS/L launched its first communications satellite - Courier-1B - in 1960. Courier was the world's first active repeater satellite, and to highlight this new technology, it was used to transmit a message from President Eisenhower to the United Nations. SS/L now builds satellites for DIRECTV, DISH Network, Sirius and XM and WildBlue.

"Over the past 50 years, the world has come to depend on satellites for communications, entertainment and national security," said John Celli, SS/L president and COO. "We are very proud of our pioneering role in the industry and the contributions this company has made to advancing the world's ability to communicate."
