News Briefs: Hughes Receives Penetration Recognition

ACCOLADES - Hughes Network Systems received the North American Vertical Market Penetration Leadership award for managed voice and data CPE service, specifically managed network services for retail. The Frost and Sullivan award recognizes Hughes for its ability to attract customers at the retail level, develop solutions that meet customers' infrastructure management needs, and provide quality customer support.

TECHNOLOGY -- In a letter addressed to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, THAT Corporation CEO LESLIE TYLER said full disclosure of the capabilities and limitations of digital TV transition (DTV) converter boxes is a must. Under current specifications, stereo sound is optional and will only be included at the discretion of individual manufacturers, the exec said. Based on these specs, the DTV transition could result in a degraded viewing experience for as many as 75 million Americans who will rely on the converters to receive digital signals starting in February 2009, the letter said.

PROGRAMMING -- MOJO, the 24/7 high-definition channel formerly known as INHD, said this week that it would not be carrying Major League Baseball games during the 2007 season as it has in the past. In April, MOJO parent iN DEMAND negotiated a carriage agreement for MLB's Extra Innings package, but HD games don't seem to be a part of the plan. According to TVPredictions.com, MOJO's carriage rights are separate from iN DEMAND's deal with the league.

FINANCIAL -- LodgeNet Entertainment will release second quarter 2007 financial results after market hours on Tuesday, July 31.
