T-Mobile gets German iPhone deal
20 сентября 2007 |
T-Mobile will bring the iPhone to market in Germany on 9 November, the same date the long-awaited handset will hit the shelves in the U.K., the mobile operator revealed Wednesday. T-Mobile covered the entire home page of its website with an image of the Apple handset, while Apple CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement at a Berlin press conference.
The move comes one day after a similar event was held at Apple's Regent Street store in London, where the computer and consumer electronics manufacturer unveiled mobile operator O2 as its U.K. partner. The iPhone will cost €399 in Germany, with a two-year T-Mobile contract. That is effectively the same as the £269 price tag slapped on the device in the U.K.
Customers will be able to buy the phone at parent company Deutsche Telekom's retail outlets, as well as via T-Mobile's online store.
In a statement, Apple's Jobs referred to the popularity of the handset in the U.S., where it was launched with carrier partner AT&T in June and a million of the devices were sold in just 74 days. He described the U.S. response to the device as "unbelievable", an experience he said he is keen to pass on to T-Mobile customers.
T-Mobile's iPhone users will benefit from the fact that the operator has EDGE coverage across its entire GSM network in Germany, providing mobile data speeds of up to 220 Kbps.
On Tuesday, O2 told reporters that it is ramping up EDGE network coverage in the U.K. in preparation for the launch of the iPhone, although declined to comment on the investment involved. It expects to have 30% EDGE coverage by 9 November.
German iPhone users will also have access to T-Mobile's international network of 20,000 WiFi hotspots, 8,600 of which are in Germany, providing download speeds of up to 11 Mbps.
