Telefonica’s 3G network expansion in Spain gets a ‘green’ light

11 февраля 2009

Nokia Siemens Networks implements eco-friendly network that increases reach, improves service quality, and reduces costs.

Telefónica Spain has undertaken a 3G network expansion which will enable it to provide high-quality mobile services to more subscribers by extending its service reach by more than 25% in dense urban areas. The expansion, which will also improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact, has been carried out by Nokia Siemens Networks.

“The Spanish telecom market is incredibly competitive, and to stay ahead we need to roll out new and improved services rapidly, while expanding our reach across the country. To achieve those goals we needed first class network implementation capabilities and innovative thinking, and that’s why we chose Nokia Siemens Networks,” said Carlos Calvo, Head of Technology, Operations & Systems at Telefónica Spain. “That’s not all though. As a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to doing our bit for the environment, and for us an ideal solution is one that takes all of these factors into account.”

With this implementation, featuring Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi Base Station, Telefónica expects to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 9,500 tones per year, which can be compared to getting 1,800 vehicles off the roads in Spain.

As the industry’s smallest, and most energy efficient base station, the Flexi can offer energy savings of up to 70 percent. Since it is lightweight, modular in architecture, and easy to implement it also helps realize additional operational savings. In addition, the Flexi Base Station is LTE ready and communication service providers can rest assured that their investments remain protected in the future.

Nokia Siemens Networks managed to carry out this very ambitious network implementation for Telefónica under a tight deadline.

Nokia Siemens Networks also provided its network and service management solution for monitoring, controlling, analyzing and managing the Telefónica network. Pentti Tolonen, Head of Customer Team Telefónica Spain at Nokia Siemens Networks said, “This project proudly allowed us to be true partners in our customer success. Nokia Siemens Networks was capable of combining the renewal of the currently installed radio base, and continuing simultaneously with the ongoing natural expansion of the 3G network, without compromising and even improving the quality of service perceived by Telefónica’s end users”.
