DTAC reduces carbon emissions across mobile network

DTAC, the second largest mobile operator in Thailand, is gearing up to handle increased growth in mobile data, while furthering its commitment to reducing its environmental impact. It has signed Nokia Siemens Networks to use its energy solutions expertise to modernize DTAC’s network with a new architecture, technology, and approach that aims to significantly lower its carbon emissions. 

“Led by our parent company, Telenor, we are committed to green technologies,” said Rolf Marthinusen, chief technology officer, DTAC. “Nokia Siemens Networks’ consulting experts have assessed our network, taking a holistic approach to reducing our energy consumption. 

“By deploying its Flexi EDGE base stations with built-in power efficiency features, using its innovative softswitching capability with capacity upgrades that enable us to close down some of our major core networks sites, and taking other simpler measures – such as improving ventilation to reduce the need for air conditioning – we will significantly reduce our power consumption, carbon emissions and operating costs,” Marthinusen said.

“We share DTAC’s desire to reduce carbon emission,” added Thitipan Worakulladthanee, head of the DTAC customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “The significant cost and scaling efficiencies built into our radio and core network technology lets DTAC compete at the next level in an increasingly mature market and do so in the most responsible way possible.”

Under the scope of the deal, Nokia Siemens Networks will deploy its latest mobile softswitching platforms that substantially decrease the environmental impact of DTAC’s core network by reducing the number of sites needed. The company will also remove a significant number of transcoder nodes by providing the same functionality with innovative Nokia Siemens Networks software features, and improve ventilation at radio network sites to reduce dependency on air conditioning. The modernized elements will reduce carbon emissions by at least 60% compared to the previous generation of infrastructure providing the same amount of capacity.
