Mobiles getting into broadband
09 сентября 2010 |
Data from TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database reveal that a growing number of wireless network operators are moving beyond their original business and into the fixed line broadband market.

SFR, France’s second largest mobile operator, has transformed itself into a broadband heavyweight in just three years through a combination of acquisitions and strong organic growth. SFR had almost no broadband subscribers in Q1 of 2007; by Q1 2010, it had 4.6 million broadband subscribers, accounting for more than 22% of the French broadband market.
While SFR is the most striking example, many other mobile operators have made inroads in the broadband market. Vodafone Germany had 3.9 million broadband subscribers in Q1 2010, while Telefonica O2 Germany and Russia’s Vimpelcom both had more than 2.4 million subscribers.
‘The majority of mobile operators forging into the broadband market are in countries with mature mobile markets, where mobile subscriber growth rates have slowed to a crawl,’ observed Tig Harvey, Research Director at TeleGeography. ’Entering the broadband market enables mobile operators to gain incremental revenues, and to market bundled services in competition with incumbents.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database is the most complete and up-to-date source of data about the wireless, broadband, and fixed line markets and service providers available anywhere. Nothing rivals the geographic scope, the depth of coverage, the timeliness, and the functionality of the GlobalComms Database.
