Intelsat Buoys iDirect for Maritime Solution

Fixed satellite services provider Intelsat inked a new agreement with iDirect Technologies, a company of VT Systems, as the platform for its Network Broadband Global Maritime service unveiled last month. Intelsat's new service solution is designed to provide maritime industry and oil field service providers with universal voice and data connectivity regardless of geographic location or network infrastructure.

Intelsat's first distribution agreement was with oil exploration company Schlumberger, which agreed to market the new maritime service worldwide, expanding the availability of its network broadband service into new geographic and vertical markets, the company said.

The solution, built on iDirect's platform, showcases new features that enable service providers to establish seamless global satellite IP networks. iDirect's beam-switching enables mobile units to remain connected through multiple satellite coverage and accurately determine the proper moment to switch from beam to beam. The technology allows maritime vessels to maintain continuous data connections as they travel across several satellite footprints.

iDirect's Network Management System assigns each remote with a persistent IP address that helps operators track them across the planet from a single monitoring site.
