News Briefs: Showdown in Satellite Handheld Market

RESEARCH - With more than 600,000 terminals deployed by the end of 2006, coupled with a growth rate of nearly 10 percent, the satellite handheld market is entering a new industry cycle. According to a new study from international research firm Euroconsult, with satellite constellations rolling out renewal strategies for satellite fleets, competition in the MSS handheld market will continue to increase. The company said fueling the marketplace will be Inmarsat's introduction of a global handheld offering, the planned launch of a new satellite covering Asia by Thuraya and potential competition from ATC systems in North America.

DISTRIBUTION - DIRECTV now offers TeleFutura KCRP-41 as part of the Corpus Christi local broadcast channel lineup. For access, customers can subscribe to the satcaster's DIRECTV MAS Spanish-language service with its starting package BASICO for $29.99 per month, or the English-language packages starting with DIRECTV CHOICE for $39.99.

INTERNATIONAL - Digital TV technology company Pace Micro Technology launched a new initiative with News Corp.'s British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) this week. The company said in its latest round of contract awards, Pace secured additional Digibox business for the 2007 fiscal year. Pace said it expects to commence deliveries of BSkyB HD set-top boxes at the end of the year and will continue shipping the DVR for Sky+.

MISCELLANY - Spot Inc. this week introduced its new SPOT Satellite Messenger, a device which gives consumers a satellite-linked line of communication, independently of cellular coverage, with emergency services and others. The service will be available starting in November through retailers and Spot Inc.'s website. The SPOT messenger will hit shelves at $149 with an initial price run at $99.
