…two words that turn Nokia Siemens Networks into Telecom Italia’s main supplier for the modernization of its 3G network.

Telecom Italia is accelerating the evolution of its mobile network in Italy to be ready to deliver Ultra Broadband Services and has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks as one of its main suppliers in the development of its new network architecture. The modernization plan will provide Telecom Italia significant power-consumption savings, of up to 65 per cent, compared to its current equipment and allow it to reduce its annual CO2 output  by about 15 million kg.

Telecom Italia will benefit from lower operational costs thanks to Nokia Siemens Networks’ modern, energy-efficient technology, which also provides environmental benefits. At the same time, the operator’s customers will enjoy new attractive services with outstanding quality, such as high-speed downloads, smooth online gaming and high-quality videos.

Under a broad cooperation agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks will modernize Telecom Italia’s 3G mobile network by installing its energy-efficient radio access solution based on the industry-leading Flexi Base Station. Thanks to this environmentally friendly innovation, Telecom Italia will achieve very significant power consumption savings, of up to 65% reduction of the current levels, and will reduce CO2 emissions by about 15 million Kg per year, an effect comparable to the absorption of CO2 by more than 1.5 million trees, or roughly 50 square km of forest.

“In our search for improving network efficiency we also kept thinking about the need to protect the environment. We are pleased to have a partner who shares our values and our concerns,” said Stefano Pileri, Head of Technology and Operations at Telecom Italia group. “Nokia Siemens Networks has a clear vision of the future and turn it into solutions in which efficiency and ecology go hand in hand.”

Other important goals that Telecom Italia plans to achieve through partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks include preparing for the future Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Nokia Siemens Networks’ multi-technology Flexi Base Station which is software upgradeable to LTE provides a smooth evolution path. Also, thanks to the small size and flexible deployment options of Flexi Base Station, the operator aims to reduce equipment footprint allowing better use of site space, and so making site sharing with other operators easier. In addition, Telecom Italia aims to optimize investment in the transport domain with Nokia Siemens Networks Internet Protocol-based solutions.

“We are proud to partner with Telecom Italia to pave their network evolution path with our latest technology designed to enable an easy, cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable way forward.” said Roberto Loiola, head of customers and markets in South East Europe for Nokia Siemens Networks.

Stefano Pileri of Telecom Italia stated “Nokia Siemens Networks’ new technologies will enable Telecom Italia to consistently increase their share of new subscribers by offering new services and improved bandwidth. The radio modernization is expected to improve the current quality of our network thanks to more advanced features which will be made available on the new network elements provided.”

Nokia Siemens Networks will be a Telecom Italia’s strategic supplier for mobile Broadband Access Networks with High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long Term Evolution technologies.
