Samsung, NTT DoCoMo in talks to jointly develop smartphone chips

15 сентября 2011

Samsung Electronics Co., NTT DoCoMo Inc., and Fujitsu Ltd. are in talks to set up a joint venture to develop semiconductors for smartphones, two people familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The market for the chips in question is currently dominated by Qualcomm Inc. of the U.S. South Korea's Samsung and Japan's NTT DoCoMo aim to reduce their dependence on Qualcomm by joining forces.

DoCoMo, Japan's biggest mobile carrier, is likely to hold the majority of the venture, the people said.

NEC Corp. and the mobile handset unit of Panasonic Corp. are also involved in the talks and are expected to invest in the venture, they added.

The talks are ongoing but it isn't clear when the companies will reach an agreement, the people said.

They said that, among other things, the companies are discussing whether to leave actual chip manufacturing to one company--likely be Samsung--or to several companies.
