Wi-Fi phone market to grow at a fast pace in the coming years

Market research group Infonetics Research has said in a report that the Wi-Fi phone market will double every year between now and 2009.

The market for these phones would reach an amazing $3.7 billion by that year. The company also found that the worldwide Wi-Fi phone market increased 116% from 2004 to 2005 to reach $125.5 million.

This segment is seeing a lot of interest from the corporate entities around the world as they are looking at ways to cut costs of communication around the world.

The research group also said that the market would eventually attract a lot of regular customers, as more companies would start bundling VoIP packages along with broadband connections.

Some other findings of their research:
  • SpectraLink is the overall leader in WiFi phone revenue, followed by Cisco and Motorola.
  • The total number of Wi-Fi phones grew 151% from 2004 to 2005 and will grow 182% between 2005 and 2006.
  • 58% of WiFi phone revenue in 2005 came from single-mode WiFi VoIP handsets, and 42% from dual-mode handsets. By 2009, 91% of revenue will come from dual-mode handsets.
  • 49% of dual-mode WiFi/cellular handset revenue came from Asia Pacific, 27% from North America, 22% from EMEA, and 2% from CALA in 2005.
