Hughes Lights Up Brazil

16 октября 2006
Hughes Network Systems has started the rollout of HughesNet broadband internet access service to 800 schools in the state of Parana, located in the southern region of Brazil. The contract was awarded earlier this year by Copel Telecom, a subsidiary of Brazilian power utility company COPEL.

Hughes will provide broadband internet access using the HN7700S satellite terminals to schools that are outside the coverage area of Copel Telecom's terrestrial network, which reaches an additional 1,300 school facilities. According to the company, by the end of the year all 2,100 state-managed schools will be online.

The government program designed to connect all state-sponsored schools is called Parana Digital. The initiative leverages the optical fiber network owned by Copel Telecom that covers most of the state. To reach areas not serviced by the fiber network, the company will use HNS' HughesNet satellite service.

In addition to providing the students with broadband internet connections, the Parana Digital program will enable the integration of administrative areas of all state-managed schools and provide access to a web portal to be used by teachers on an ongoing basis.
