Intelsat, Hughes Expands UNOPAR’s Distance Learning Program in South America

22 февраля 2007
Intelsat announced that it extended its existing contract with Brazil’s "União Norte do Paraná de Ensino S/A (UNOPAR) to offer additional capacity via Intelsat’s IS-1R satellite, enabling UNOPAR to broaden distribution of its distance learning program.

UNOPAR officials reported a significant increase in satellite transponder demand, as the popularity of their distance learning program has steadily increased. Chief Technology Officer João Navarro of UNOPAR said, “Intelsat’s IS-1R satellite has an ideal coverage area that will enable our continued expansion by bringing the virtual classroom to many communities in other South American countries.”

UNOPAR and Hughes Telecomunicações do Brasil Ltda (HTB) jointly operate a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite network provided by Hughes Network Systems. Securing more satellite capacity from Intelsat enables UNOPAR’s Connected Education Center to expand its VSAT network. This expansion ensures that UNOPAR can maintain the high technical standards needed to serve its growing number of teleclassrooms. Throughout the past year, UNOPAR increased the number of teleclassrooms it operates to more than 1,000 – serving 70,000 students enrolled in its Connected Presence Teaching System (CPTS). Carmen Gonzalez-Sanfeliu, Intelsat’s Vice President, Latin American Operations, said, “This new agreement with UNOPAR demonstrates Intelsat’s ability to work together with HTB as a local partner to provide regional solutions for the most sought-after services. Through this agreement, we are able to help UNOPAR expand distance learning in Brazil and throughout South America.”
