News Briefs: Euros Ditching Mobile TV

22 марта 2007
RESEARCH - A new study on Mobile TV in Europe grounds the notion that portable video is taking off in the United States. Commissioned by telco company Tellabs, a survey by M:Metrics found that former mobile TV users in Europe outnumber current users by nearly 20 percent. Among the 22K surveyed for the study, 45 percent said price and almost 25 percent said quality were the reasons why they abandoned the service. Mobile TV is trying to gain traction here in the States as the likes of Qualcomm's MediaFlo unit and Modeo - already operating overseas - begin to create alliances with U.S. wireless companies to deliver the service.

TECHNOLOGY - Loral Skynet unveiled a satellite-based cellular backhaul service enabling mobile operators to extend their networks and reduce operational costs of serving remote and low ARPU areas. Called SkyReach Cellular Backhaul, the new service replaces E1/T1 lines with optimized satellite links to provide Abis connectivity between operators' base station controller and base transceiver stations.
