25 million take tablets in Q2

26 июля 2012

Worldwide shipments of tablet devices reached 24.9 million in the second quarter of this year, up 67% on the year-ago quarter, with Apple taking a dominant market share, according to new research from Strategy Analytics.

Apple shipped 17 million iPads during the three months, giving it a 68% share of the market, its strongest since the third quarter of 2010, the analyst firm said.

Meanwhile, Android-powered devices accounted for 29% of the total, the same share it captured a year ago, although shipments grew by 66% to 7.3 million units. And Microsoft saw shipments of tablets using its operating system halve to 0.3 million and its market share cut to 1.2% from 4%.

"Despite high expectations for companies like Amazon, Samsung, Acer and Asus, the Android community has yet to make a serious dent in Apple's dominance of the tablet market," said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, in a statement.

"Unspectacular hardware designs, limited uptake of cellular models and a modest number of tablet-optimized services have been among some of the main reasons for Android's mixed performance so far," he added.

Strategy Analytics also pointed out that the forthcoming release of the Windows operating system, Windows 8, "cannot come quickly enough for Microsoft." Hardware makers like Dell will need the new OS to be able to compete effectively in the tablet space, it said.
