WiFi-radio chip maker raises Ј16 million

12 февраля 2007
Watford, a small town north of London, home to a mediocre soccer team, but young and talented midfielder, Ashley Young, is also home for Frontier Silicon, a specialist in products for digital media gear for the home and for the road. We wrote about the emergence of WiFi radio, and it is good to see a company that makes chips for WiFi radio and mobile TV secure an investment of Ј16 million in its latest financing round, which was led by new investor Mitsui Private Equity. Frontier Silicon's CEO Anthony Sethill is correct to note that "This investment is a confirmation of our strategy."

Frontier Silicon has shipped more than one million ICs for mobile TV-enabled cellular handsets, and the company owns a portfolio of solutions supporting multiple standards including DVB-H, T-DMB, and DAB-IP. Note that the company also has more than 70 percent of the DAB receiver market, and it has recently launched a new mass-market WiFi radio receiver which adds Internet radio and network audio streaming capability to mass-market audio products. "We are also very confident about our new WiFi radio solution which is helping to create a new segment in the digital audio market; one that is predicted to boom over the coming few years," said Sethill.
