Russian mobile subs up 3m in July, Ukraine growth slow
|20 августа 2008|
MegaFon and Vimpelcom outdo market leader MTS in terms of Russian net adds; just 135,000 new customers signed up in whole of Ukraine, AC&M reports.
The number of mobile subscribers in Russia grew by almost 3 million to 175.75 million during July, according to new statistics released Tuesday.
Industry analysts Advanced Communications & Media (AC&M) reported that SIM penetration in Russia has now reached 121.1%, up from 119.1% at the end of June.
Meanwhile, penetration in the Ukraine was similar at end-June at 119.3%, but the country did not see the same growth as its neighbour experienced in July. Fewer than 135,000 new customers were added last month, taking the total in the Ukraine to 55.31 million.
Although MTS maintains its position as market leader in Russia, it was usurped by both MegaFon and Vimpelcom in terms of net customer additions last month. The pair accounted for 69.5% of all new adds in July, MegaFon taking a fraction more than its rival, while just 16.9% of new users chose MTS.
The big three between them served 82.5% of the market as of 31 July. MTS had 61.86 million subscribers, Vimpelcom 43.41 million, and MegaFon 39.72 million. The next largest players, Tele2 and Uralsvyazinform, reported a comparatively small 9.67 million and 5.45 million customers respectively.
MTS did not fare so well in the Ukraine though, where it lost over 500,000 subscribers last month, causing its total to drop to 18.6 million.
The telco ranks second in the market behind Kyivstar, which added around 130,000 subscribers and ended the month with a customer base of 23.45 million.
Astelit remains a distant third, with 10.33 million subscribers, while Vimpelcom is a relative minnow in the Ukraine with just 2.26 million.
