Apple overtakes Nokia as largest handset vendor by revenue

Apple Inc. has overtaken Nokia Corp. as the world's largest vendor of mobile handsets by revenue, research firm Strategy Analytics said Thursday after both companies released earnings.

"We estimate Apple's wholesale revenues for its iPhone handset division stood at $11.9 billion in the first quarter of 2011," Alex Spektor, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said."Apple overtook Nokia for the first time, which recorded a lower $9.4 billion of wholesale handset revenues."

The research firm noted that Apple captured this market share in less than four years.

"Apple's proprietary ecosystem of hardware, software and services has proven wildly popular and hugely profitable," Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics said.

Nokia remains the world's biggest handset maker in terms of shipments, figures from the companies showed. Nokia said mobile device shipments rose 1% in the first quarter to 108.5 million, while Apple said it had sold 18.6 million iPhones over the same period.

Apple has seen sales surge since it launched its iPhone, and that has helped drive sales of other devices like iPods and the iPad tablet computer. By contrast, Nokia's market share has been shrinking as it has struggled to come up with an operating system that competes with Apple's interface. In February, Nokia said its Symbian operating system would make way for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows as its primary system for smartphones. However, the company expects the transition to Windows to take about two years.

Boston-based Strategy Analytics noted that Apple's rivals are chasing hard, particularly those running Google Inc.'s Android operating system. It expects the number of phones sold with Android to overtake those with Apple's system by late 2011. It thinks Nokia's partnership with Microsoft could also be a threat to Apple's dominance on the handset market.
